To pile on WT's take on the Iraq War, who ever would've guessed that Iraq would become a terrorist haven? What a shocker!
Ah, the Pentagon. Never making mistakes. Always getting involved in such groundbreaking research.
I didn't know Dave Barry was retiring from his column. Sad news.
I recommend reading this article about "egocasting." The TV addiction stuff rang a little too true for me, unfortunately (C-Dawgg can probably attest to that...especially the symptom of "impatience"). However, I agree with little Rosen says about iPods. It seemed to be a weak distraction from the more dangerous point she was making about TiVo and TVs.
In that last article, there was a brief mention of The Wire, which is an HBO series I just started watching on DVD after reading its high praise on the internet. Well, it lived up to any expectations I had. It's now my favorite show, bumping out The West Wing (though that show has had a small renaissance with My Hero Josh leaving the White House to run an idealistic presidential campaign). The Wire is based on the Baltimore drug wars (centered just a few blocks west of where I lived a couple of summers ago). It basically pits a group of crusading cops against some West Baltimore drug lords who run a very successful and hierarchical operation. But the moralizing quotient is super-low and there are good guys and bad guys on each side. Actually, I'd go further than that and say that nobody is portrayed as really "good" or "bad." The characters are, at best, flawed and trying hard. Anyway, the head writers have spent many years in Baltimore and written a couple of excellent books (Homicide and The Corner which have actually been made into other HBO shows). In the past couple days, two articles in the NY Times have exhibited just how realistic their new show is (see here and here). When a TV show is this well done, watching it back-to-back on DVD with no commercials and few breaks is really enjoyable because of the long-term character development and satisfyingly slow plot. It's the best thing I've seen on any screen this year--even better than Garden State or Eternal Sunshine or Sideways or Maria Full of Grace or Napoleon Dynamite, which are the best movies I've seen this year. (Also recommended: Friday Night Lights, Closer, and In Good Company . . . keep in mind that there are at least a half dozen 2004 movies that I haven't seen yet that I expect would make these lists.) So go rent The Wire. And feel free to exhibit some of your TV addiction in the comments.

The research by the Pentagon sounds like the cutting room floor at Austin Powers 18 scriptwriting HQ.
The other half and I will today be renting season 1 of The Wire on your recommendation. You had better not be wasting my time.
Oh and btw, you and our president share a taste in film. His favorite movie of the year? Friday Night Lights.
You know, the BBC news posted an article the other day lamenting the decline in young consumers' tastes in alcohol - namely mixed drinks over beer and ale. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4181109.stm) And I thought the whole complaint was a bit trivial. I am not a particularly enlightened student of culture, and I have strong personal preferences. Why again is this bad? This article (on ego-casting) seems to be complaining half the time about people pursuing entertainment according to their individual taste, and the other half of the time about a failure to promote "creative individuality." What danger is posed to society by people consuming according to their preferences? And is cultural decay - if that's what it is - really a threat equivalent to declines in social service, e.g.? If you pay your taxes and vote, I'm not sure why I should care what you watch. Having said that, I disagree with you, N-dawgg. The headphones-in-public thing has always annoyed me. I much prefer that people take risks when it comes to public, interpersonal interactions, than private activities like television-viewing or museum-going.
Last month, the New York Times Magazine had a multi-page advertisement exhorting all hip young 20-somethings to drink scotch. So we'll see if that helps....
Yeah, I'm not sure that I agree with all the claims in the article and you're right about its two faces. I mostly just wanted to give a shout-out to all the other TV addicts out there. However, I do think there is something to her comments about the "cultivation of taste" vs. "numbing repititon of fetish" and the dangers of "group polarization." In your parlance, I'm happy that people pay taxes, but I worry about how they vote.
With regard to the iPod, what's the harm with putting on headphones in the subway or riding the bus or running on the treadmill? I guess I don't quite undestand the risk these folks are passing up. They're just passing the time and fighting their numbing reptition. ("Urban orchestra" my ass.) I don't think the iPod fits in the author's thesis because when we "sample," we're engaging in the opposite of "group polarization" and "numbing repition of fetish."

I just came across a great gardening website called AtlGardening.com*. Not only does it feature articles for the gardening enthusiast, but has become a great sun garden
resource for me in my landscaping effort. The webmaster of this site has recently added a book section that seemed to expand everytime I go there.
What I like about it is that I get instant access to the book and don't have to wait for the book(s) to arrive which of course saves me money.....no shipping charges.... in some cases. Great idea. I love it. You must check it out today. Let me know what you think.
Really nice to find a great blog like yours!
